Optimism for the season ahead

Blades team WembleyWhilst standing on the terrace at Morecambe on Saturday afternoon watching the Blades comfortably brush aside Morecambe, I was scanning my eyes across the pitch to see which side Danny Wilson had fielded.

I couldn't help but think to myself that maybe we don't have such of a decimated team as some may have you to believe.

Granted, the summer transfer window is yet to slam shut, but when I look at the players we still have on our books, it fills me with a little bit of confidence.

We will be without the services of the obvious absentees such as Ched Evans, Matt Lowton and, you'd assume, Lee Williamson, but there's still a neucleus in that team.

At the time of writing, the centre-back partnership of Harry Maguire and Neill Collins still remains in tact, as does midfield maestros Michael Doyle and Kevin McDonald.

Straight down the middle of the park still remains as strong as last season for the Blades, and I'm sure there's not one Unitedite who would swap any of those four players for a realistic different face to be a regular starter ahead of them this season, following on from last season's strong partnerships.

Michael DoyleMaguire, Collins, Doyle and McDonald were mainstays in the United starting 11 last season (barring any injuries or suspensions), and more of the same this season would be greatly received by all that club.

That's perhaps why there was such desperation from everyone involved at United for the out-of-contract Kevin McDonald to pen a new deal at Bramall Lane.

Whilst Ched Evans may have grabbed most of the headlines last season, the roles of all four players could not be underestimated; unsung heroes perhaps?

We will have to get used to a new man between the sticks at the Lane, but that's not necessarily a bad thing following on from the inconsistency of Steve Simonsen we had to put up with last season - not to mention his pretty large wage packet.

That new face seems likely to be Mark Howard, with United's alleged quest for a new goalkeeper quietened. Howard has featured in almost all of United's pre-season friendlies, and has subsequently kept a clean sheet in every one apart from the Ilkeston game where he conceded a late goal from Harry Maguire's brother.

The familiar faces of Matt Hill, Chris Porter, Ryan Flynn, Richard Cresswell and Stephen Quinn still remain, with the latter's future still yet to be properly decided, with clubs from higher leagues showing an interest.

Providing there is no dramatic movement in the transfer window in regards to outgoings; coupled with the shrewd additions of Shaun Miller, Tony McMahon and John Cofie, United fans can look positively ahead to the new season.

When the transfer window slams shut we will of course have an even clearer view of what Danny Wilson has at his disposal.

And speaking of Wilson, I'm sure we're all still pleased that he is still with the Blades despite not gaining promotion last year, which was affected by circumstances totally out of his hands which we're all aware about.

Harry MaguireThe style of football Danny likes to play appeases all Blades fans, and there were many times we steamrolled teams last season because of our inginuity and beautiful football.

Below 2nd place is not an option as far as I'm concerned. We must finish in the top two if we want to gain promotion, with our record in the play-offs being a subject which is less talked about the better!

This forthcoming season is one we can all look forward to, and let's hope we do the business this time.
