Lane Legends: Jimmy Hagan

Jimmy Hagan was an outstanding player, but despite this he was only capped once by England in a 0-0 draw against Denmark in 1949. However he did play in some non-competitive games during Second World War.

After the War he went into management, notably with Midlands’s side West Bromwich Albion and Benfica, but it was at Peterborough United where he enjoyed local football.

Peterborough, who was a good non-league side during late ‘fifties’, they won the Midlands League with ease and embarrassed Football League teams in the F.A. Cup.

‘The Posh’ again won the Championship during 1959-60 season but it was there magnificent run in F.A. Cup that gained them Football League status.

The following season saw United take the Fourth Division by storm as they romped to the title and scoring 134 goals in the process.

In 1962 Hagan saw more F.A. Cup glory has his Posh side beat Newcastle United away at St James Park only to be knocked out in next round 3-1 to Sheffield United at London Road.

In the same year Hagan resigned as manager of Peterborough United and return to his old club, West Bromwich Albion where he won the League Cup in 1966.

Jimmy Hagan died in his Sheffield home in March 1998, there now has a life-size statue of him in the ticket office at Bramall Lane.
