He was back at Hillsborough the following season but had to wait until Christmas time in a 1-0 home defeat to Wolves before he made his debut. He did play in his first Steel City Derby when the Blades won 2-1 away on 1 April 2001.

A side that was relegated the season previous from the Premiership wasn't exactly showing eagerness to return as form never got off the mark but they did retain their Division One status until May 2003.

The 2001/02 season wasn't exactly eventful for either Sheffield side with the Blades finishing 13th and the Owls 20th. But Bromby, now an established first team defender played in both derbies which ended 0-0.

His first Wednesday goal and booking of his career came in a game against Manchester City at Hillsborough and although Pablo Bonvin scored after three minutes the Sky Blues still came out 6-2 winners.

Wednesday did have something to cheer that season as they reached the League Cup Semi-Final, losing to Blackburn Rovers 6-3 on aggregate.

It became quite apparent that the Owls were not going anywhere and this was proven a season later when they were relegated, though their only joy being a 2-0 victory over the Blades at the start of the season and a 7-2 win at Burnley near the end. United did save there blushes and prevented a Sheffield double with a 3-1 win in January 2003.

During that season, Bromby received his first dismissal of his career in a three-nil defeat at Wimbledon. He had only just returned from a loan spell at Norwich City for which he played five games.

His Division Two career did not last long, one season in fact. our Sheffield counterparts where not promoted but Bromby and Quinn where with a move across the City. He scored his third career goal in a 3-1 defeat at Colchester as the Owls reached the LDV Vans Trophy Northern Area Final which they lost to eventual winners Blackpool 3-0 on aggregate.

This small success somehow kept Chris Turner his job at Wednesday but decided to re-shape his squad. He did this by releasing 19 players and bringing in fresh faces. Bromby was snapped up by Neil Warnock, it was certainly a move that brought some controversy but by no means has paid off.

He made his Blades debut at Burnley during the 2004/05 season on the opening day, it ended 1-1. So far this season Bromby has been almost man of the match in every game and his long throws make him an exceptional player.

Sheffield United had success in the FA Cup, after seeing off Aston Villa (3-1) in round three they beat West Ham United on penalties before losing on penalties to Arsenal at Bramall Lane.

Bromby netted just five goals throughout that season (against; Plymouth Argyle, Ipswich Town, Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United and Preston North End) but was solid at the back in his Blades debut season.

The following campaign saw United reach the dizzy heights of the Premiership after finishing up as automatic second placed behind Champions Reading. The former Owl netted in the last minute of the opening game of the season against Leicester City in a thrilling 4-1 victory, but this was to be his only seasons goal.

The Blades and Royals were run away top two teams throughout with Watford later joining them after beating Leeds United in the Play-Off Final.

It capped off a fantastic season, winning at Cardiff City (1-0) on Easter Friday and with three games remaining.

He played on the opening day of the 2006/07 season against Liverpool at Bramall Lane, Rob Hulse netted the Cutlers goal as they drew 1-1 on the day.

Bromby (up until 8 February 2007) has played in just fourteen Premiership fixtures with Robert Kozluk and Derek Geary putting in outstanding performances the full-back has been pushed out.
