McAllister joined Sheffield United under the management of Micky Adams in January 2011, although it is understood that a deal had already been agreed and signed before the manager’s appointment.
He started his football career with Drogheda United in 2007 after successful spells with various youth clubs in the Dublin area. With the Dogs he played well at Under-20 level and eventually joined Division One side Shelbourne on loan in order to gain experience.
On 11 June 2008 he made his debut against Limerick 37 as a substitute in a 2-0 loss; during a 16 appearance stay he scored seven goals from midfield and was signed up as a permanent player for the following season’s league campaign.
Shelbourne finished as runners up for the second time in as many years in 2009 with McAllister being virtually ever present; he scored a respectable 16 goals along the way.
With inspirations of international and domestic honours he left the club to join St. Patrick’s Athletic, their Dublin rivals - in the top flight. For Athletic, he scored five goals in 40 league and cup appearances and following impressive displays caught the eye of other teams.
In November 2010 he came to Bramall Lane on trial which proved to be very successful and a deal was agreed on the 18th of that same month. He joined officially joined United on 6th January 2011 and made his debut two days later as a second half substitute in the 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa in the Third round of the FA Cup.
