He scored a vital goal at Ipswich Town to take the Blades to the Championship Play-Off Final, but what is former Celtic striker Andy Walker doing now?
Name: Andy Walker (striker)
Born: 06/04/1964 - Glasgow, Scotland.
Clubs: Motherwell (1984-87), Celtic (1987-91), Newcastle United (1991, loan), Bolton Wanderers (1991-94), Celtic (1994-96), Sheffield United (1996-98), Hibernian (1998, loan), Raith Rovers (1998, loan), Ayr United (1998-99), Carlisle United (1999), Partick Thistle (1999), Kilwinning Rangers (1999-00), Alloa Athletic (2000).
Glasgow born striker Andy Walker played a pivotal role in the Blades successful 1996/97 season which as tradition is the Red and White Wizards succumbed to a Play-Off Final defeat. He arrived at Bramall Lane in February 1996 under the manager of Howard Kendall; making his debut in a then rare 1-0 win over Barnsley.
In his previous time as a professional footballer he had spent time in both Scotland and England, most notably with Celtic, whom he spent six seasons at Parkhead in two different spells winning the League title in 1987 and their FA Cup in 1987 and 1995.
But the arrival of Andreas Thom in summer of 1995 marked his exit from the Bhoys and in early 1996 made the £500,000 move to S2. He remained ever present with 14 appearances and eight goals at the back end of that season; the club were struggling at the time in what was a pretty make shift squad; but did include £1,000,000 midfielder Don Hutchinson.
The Scot netted his first Blades goal in his third start, in a 1-0 win at Birmingham City and he was to foil the Blues the following season when the two sides impressively drew 4-4 in the early stages of the 1996/97 season, netting a brace along with two from Gareth Taylor.
Walker kept the dream alive of reaching the Play-Offs with a 3-1 win over Oxford United, Dane Whitehouse and Jan Fjortoft the other scorers, he also netted in a win against Reading (2-0) - but his most memorable time at the Lane came at Portman Road in the Play-Offs.
After a 1-1 draw at the Lane in the first leg the Blades travelled to Ipswich Town where Petr Katchouro netted an early goal for United before Ipswich netted twice to give them a 2-1 lead; but with time running out Walker gambled at the far post and despite being impeded was able to knock the ball home and send United to Wembley on the away goals rule. However they lost the final 1-0 to Crystal Palace.
He fell down the pecking order during the 1997/98 campaign; United had strengthen their side with the arrival of Brazilian striker Marcelo, and with the in form Fjortoft and Gareth Taylor; Walker was reduced merely to the substitutes bench.
Walker went on loan moves to Scottish clubs Hibernian and Raith Rovers for a short period and at the end of the 1997/98 season was allowed to leave Bramall Lane to team up with Ayr United. For the following twelve months he had spells with Carlisle United, Partick Thistle, Kilwinning Rangers (non-league) and finally Aloa Athletic before hanging up his boots.
Following retirement from the beautiful game the three capped Scottish international turned to broadcasting where he has enjoyed being a TV pundit on various Scottish football shows.
