Hulse celebrates scoring the first Premiership goal of the season, having put United 1-0 up against Liverpool.
Sheffield United would have to wait until 19 August until the Blades would come up against the mighty Liverpool at Bramall Lane in what was to be the first Premier League fixture of the new season.

Before that they would have to finish off a tour the Netherlands before the Reds descended in Sheffield 2.

In early August the Blades would see an international flavour as new signings Li Tie (China) and Christian Nadé (France U-21) would receive their first call ups against Singapore and Belgium respectively at their new club.

The month of August was started with a 0-0 draw at Nott's County before taking to Holland to begin a mini tour. On 2 August new signing Claude Davis finds out that a knee injury is worse than first thought and will have to wait until at least six weeks until he can make his debut.

Geoff Horsfield is carted off to Leeds United on a six month loan deal with a view to a permanent move before a René Ponk (keeper) own goal three minutes from time give United a 1-0 win at Sparta Rotterdam.

The second and final game in Holland saw United cap a 2-2 draw with Den Haag with Ade Akinbiyi receiving a red card. Mikele Leigertwood and Rob Hulse netting the goals.

On the 19 August Sheffield United and Liverpool were the first team to kick-off a Premiership match as the game was selected by Sky Television with a 12:45 kick-off; and it was United who landed the first top flight goal when Rob Hulse headed home David Unsworth free-kick early on in the second half.

Hopes of an upset where dashed when Robbie Fowler converted a penalty after Steve Gerrard was tripped.

Dimitar Berbatov and Jermaine Jenas gave Tottenham Hotspur a comfortable 2-0 win at White Hart Lane as the Blades failed to perform.

The Blades misery in the Capital was set to continue as a few days later a Jummy Bullard free-kick was the difference between Fulham and the Blades at Craven Cottage.

United start their life in the Premier League with just one point from a possible nine and are placed next to bottom, things would later improve. Just before the transfer window closed on 31 August the Blades take Colin Kazim-Richards from Brighton for a fee of £150,000.
