The showpiece, set to take place on Sunday 1st August 2010, will be 90 minutes for every Blades fan to savour for the rest of their lives. Estudiantes, who are bossed by former Blades midfielder Alex Sabella, have agreed to fly all the way over to the UK just to play United!
The 1st of August, which is the date which United's annual Open Day is hosted at the Lane is now the biggest yet after it was confirmed that players such as Clemente Rodriguez and Juan Sebastian Veron will be entering the hallowed turf of Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane. Veron actually 'dreamed' of playing for Sheffield United when young. His dad Pedro Verde was playing for the Blades when Juan was a boy.
Estudiantes de La Plata, who play their home games at the Jorge Luis Hirschi Stadium, are the reigning champions of the Copa Libertadores, a South America competition which is the equivalent to Europe's Champions League.
There's no questioning that 'The Rat Stabbers', as they are commonly known as, are one of the biggest clubs in Argentine football and, not only Argentine football, but in the world!
To have scooped such a major team to play at S2 is credit to the board. Mansfield, Burton, Rotherham and Notts County may be the nitty gritty stuff the Blades have to deal with, but the challenge of Estudiantes awaiting them is, well, something out of this world.
Trevor Birch, United's Chief Executive, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for our supporters to watch our team against footballers with a great tradition of skilful football, and we are grateful that Estudiantes are making the trip just to play against ourselves."
Sports consultant Carly Barnes who is co-ordinating the visit, said: "Estudiantes De La Plata is a world class team and they are very much looking forward to this game. They are well aware Sheffield is the place where football was born, and consider it a great honour to come and play against United. We all hope this will be the beginning of a positive and constructive relationship between the two clubs."
Perhaps they could season-long loan us Veron? After all, United were who he was desperate to play for as a child. At least we have one thing in common - red and white stripes!
The Open Day's usual main attraction is the Blades players' signatures - not now! Be proud and thankful we have such prestigious visitors.
Keep an eye out on Blades Mad for all the pre-season build-up, especially this one-off mouthwatering clash!
