That leaves the Bramall Lane outfit with no strikers on the bench and no centre-backs to cover, although right-back Kyle Walker can play a central position too.

Kevin Blackwell has already shipped in players on loan basis'. Those include Blackburn duo Mark Bunn and Keith Treacy. Kyle Walker and James Harper are both also on loan from Tottenham and Reading respectively.

"If I can do something by Friday I will do and I am talking to one or two targets," said the Blades boss. "But when I make inquiries I often find that the likes of Middlesbrough and Newcastle United are also in the running, so my search often comes down to the same four or five players that they are looking at as well.

"I would be happier doing a deal for the full 93 loan period if possible rather than just for a month because then I will know which players I have available for a few weeks."
