He was top notch in the sailing's Laser class. Goodison beat his 4th place finish in Athens four years ago. Paul's performance yesterday (Sunday) was remarkable so the scenario for him losing on Monday was unlikely.

The lifetime Blade beat Slovenia's Vasilij Zbogar and Italy's Diego Romero to the gold medal. Goodison went on a sailing trip with Blades boss Kevin Blackwell in June. Also on board was former Gaffer Neil Warnock. (Article continues below)

The club has organised Paul to attend a Blade game to show off his gold medal at his beloved Bramall Lane. Goodison said: "With conditions so tricky there was only one way to ensure I got gold and that's what I did.

"It's been a testing week and I've hung in, I delivered yesterday which made it easier today. It just feels unbelievable. It's going to take a while to sink in but wow.

"You come to every Olympics to do your best and I'm on top of the table."

United Chairman Kevin McCabe said: "This is a remarkable performance from Paul. We were willing him on to win especially after the heartache of Athens four years ago when he just missed out on a medal."

Well done Paul!
