Blades in talks with Carver

He was installed as Blades manager yesterday (Tuesday), but Gary Speed is wasting no time in trying to bring in the right man to be alongside him during his stint as United manager.

Speed has outlined John Carver, Peter Reid's current assistant at Plymouth Argyle, as his number one candidate to join his backroom staff. Carver was assistant at Newcastle United at the same time Speed was playing for the Geordies.

Discussions are currently taking place and an agreement between Argyle and the Blades is understood to be struck in the next few days. Sam Ellis, Kevin Blackwell's assistant, will stay play a role at Bramall Lane, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

Confirming on Plymouth's official website, Reid stated: "Sheffield United called me, and I have given them permission to have a chat with John."

Carver is familiar with Speed, of course, but he also knows Sam Ellis well after spending time with him at Leeds and Luton. Carver and Ellis were both part of Kevin Blackwell's set-up at Elland Road and Kenilworth Road.
