Carl Asaba In Action Against Forest
An away trip to boggy side Gillingham saw a 1-1 draw at the Priestford Stadium, United now in 6th position met Watford at home at the end of September, but they fell to their first defeat at Bramall Lane as it ended 2-1.

Wycombe Wanderers were hammered 4-1 in Second Round of Worthington Cup before giving Wolves a 3-1 thrashing at Molineux. The Blades, now 4th got a great escape at Brighton, United were 2-0 down before Michael Brown pulled one back with 15 minutes to go. Carl Asaba came off the bench to equalise before scoring two penalty's to complete a 4-2 victory.

The Blades beat Stoke City 2-1 to stay 4th in table before drawing 1-1 with Wimbledon. Two away games went terribly wrong when they lost 2-1 at Derby and then 3-0 at Nottingham Forest, not a great result to go into a game against Leeds United.

The game against the Whites in Worthington Cup Third Round started badly when Steve Yates put through his own goal to put the visitors ahead. However with just four minutes of stoppage time added onto the 90, United hit back. Blades defender Phil Jagielka hammered a stunning half volley straight into Robinsons goal from 35 yards out before Peter Ndlovu scrambled home a giant killing victory.

United drew 0-0 with Ipswich Town the following game, Darren Bent coming closest when he hit the post, though the next game, Bradford City away turned out to be a treat for Blades fans as they dominated the game to win 5-0 with goals from Steve Kabba, Dean Windass (both making there debuts after being bought from Crystal Palace and on loan from Middlesbrough respectively), Shaun Murphy, Michael Brown and Carl Asaba.

Windass made it two goals in two games against Crystal Palace at Bramall Lane before Eagles equalised but a last minute Wayne Allison goal won the game. Allison was on target again the following game as United beat Sunderland 2-0 in Worthington Cup, Shaun Murphy opened the scoring.

The Blades first ever visit to Leicester City's Walkers Stadium ended 0-0, a great result against a quality team, but United produced a great performance to beat Reading 2-0 at the Madejski Stadium with goals from Jon Harley and Dean Windass, this game ended Royals seventh unbeaten game.

The Cup run continued as Neil Warnock's Blades marched on to Worthington Cup Semi-Final after beating Crystal Palace at home, Carl Asaba put Blades ahead in first half but a unfortunate own goal by Murphy just minutes from full-time drew Eagles level. However two goals from substitute Paul Peschisolido (one goal was defiantly offside though) took the Blades through to play Liverpool in a two legged affair.

Two 1-0 wins against Preston North End and Walsall and a 0-0 draw at home to Coventry City left United in a respective 3rd position before Christmas with 46 points from a total of 75.
