The former Everton striker has signed a two and a half year deal at the Britannia Stadium. The initial fee is £2.5m but could rise to £3.5m if the Potters stay up.

On the move to the Potters, Beattie said: "I'm slightly disappointed to leave Sheffield United. I had 18 great months there and really enjoyed it.

"I face a challenge now coming to Stoke City and I'm delighted to be here."

United boss Kevin Blackwell said: "It is a tremendous opportunity that has come along for James and we are sure he will be an outstanding player for Stoke City. It has been terrific working with him and everyone at Bramall Lane wishes him the best."
