Smeets who is a Congolese national was signed by Adrian Heath before 1999-00 season from Belgium side AA Ghent on a free transfer.
He made his debut on the opening day of the season away at Portsmouth, the Blades lost 2-0 and Smeets had the misfortune of receiving two yellow cards.
Unfortunately for Smeets he didn't fit into the team very well and was conceded as 'worst buy' by the fans. After 4 first team starts (4 sub) he was released in June 2000.
He moved onto Standard Liege 2 and later Tukish team Ankaragucu on a bosman in August 2003 though didn't last long. In January he tried his luck in France and then Italy but had unsuccessful trials with FC Metz and Torino.
