The reasoning behind the halt in their chase for the 26-year-old is because of Matthew's agent's 'excessive wage demands', confirm the top-flight Lancashire club. In a statement, Burnley FC said:

'Burnley Football Club can confirm an interest in signing Sheffield United central defender Matthew Kilgallon.

However, the club is not prepared to meet the agent's excessive wage demands for his player.

Contrary to a national newspaper report, the club has no intention of breaking its wage structure and disrupting the togetherness of a united squad.

Burnley Football Club will instead look elsewhere for reinforcements.'

Earlier in the week, it was reported that the Clarets had submitted a bid for the Yorkshireman, one which United accepted, a fee believed to be around the £1.75m mark, but the player rejected the move.
