The Welshman was beaten to the post by Burnley's Robbie Blake who has been in sensational form recently. He netted one of five goals in the Clarets' 5:0 thumping over Nottingham Forest and recorded the winning goal in Burnley's trip to Plymouth at the end of the month.
Michael Kightly and Sammy Clingan also missed out on the monthly accolade. Cotterill tucked away three penalties in the month of March but that wasn't enough for him to collect the award.
