Details of Sander Berge's relegation release clause revealed

Sander Berge will be available for £35m this summer following Sheffield United's relegation from the Premier League.

This is due to a release clause that has been triggered after it was confirmed that the Blades would be playing Championship football next season. Berge arrived at Bramall Lane in January 2020 for a club record fee of £22m but has had his involvement this season limited by injury.

HIs absence for much of the campaign has coincided with the Blades' form falling off a cliff. They have spent almost the entire season in the drop zone with relegation finally confirmed last month.

It is widely expected that the highly-rated Berge will leave the club in the summer with Milan, Arsenal and even Liverpool all being linked. Recently, the Italian media had claimed that the midfielder might be available for a snip at just £12m.

However, the Yorkshire Examiner has rubbished these reports, confirming that it will take £35m to prise Berge away from the Blades. The confusion likely arose from a mistranslated Sky Sports report which stated that his release clause has dropped by £10m following the relegation.

Berge currently has three years left to run on his deal at Sheffield United, leaving the club in a strong negotiating position ahead of the significant interest that is likely to come this summer. Currently in the race for the 23-year-old are Arsenal, Everton and Aston Villa, as well as several other clubs from across the continent.

The Gunners have a connection that could help them beat off competition for the player as Mikel Arteta's assistant, Albert Stuivenberg, has previously managed Berge at Genk. He could be one of several players brought to north London at the end of the season with Arteta planning a much-needed squad revamp.
