Hard work ahead for Speed

Gary Speed admits he has plenty to work on at Sheffield United after his first game in management ended in defeat. Middlesbrough striker Kris Boyd capitalised on an error from Blades skipper Chris Morgan to grab the only goal of a dour game in the 52nd minute. Morgan misjudged a flick-on from Scott McDonald and Boyd broke clear before slotting past Steve Simonsen to claim his first goal for the Teessiders. Speed was encouraged by aspects of his side's play, but is aware they must improve in the coming weeks and months. "To come here and limit Boro to one clear chance, which is all they really had, is very encouraging," said Speed, who was promoted from his position of first-team coach following the departure of Kevin Blackwell. "But the down side of that is that we didn't create too much ourselves. We had a few more chances than they did but didn't create a great deal which is something we'll have to work on."
