Kenny was injured after a clash with ex-Blade Shaun Derry in the heroic win at Crystal Palace last Tuesday.
It has taken up until now for a diagnosis due to the severity of the swelling.
Kenny: Out until January
"They reckon that three months should do it so we're looking to be without Paddy until just after Christmas. It's not good but it could have been a lot, lot worse" Blades boss Neil Warnock told the Sheffield Star.
"They've said that Paddy shouldn't need another operation now and it should be around New Year when he's ready to come back."
United should now be free to keep goalie Paul Gerrard for his full loan period after Everton secured the deadline day signing of Nigel Martyn from Leeds. It was feared the club may have recalled Gerrard to cover for the injured Richard Wright.
