Manchester United to Offer Dean Henderson Bumper New Contract - Will Challenge David De Gea

Manchester United are set to offer Dean Henderson a lucrative new contract with the Englishman expected to challenge David de Gea for the number one jersey next season.

Henderson spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Sheffield United, putting in some impressive performances to help Chris Wilder's side secure a ninth placed finish. He was also recently nominated for the Premier League Young Player of the Year award.

De Gea, in stark contrast, endured another error strewn campaign, leading to question marks over his long term future as United's number one.

According to Ian McGarry (via the Express), Henderson is currently earning £12,000-per-week. United are prepared to quintuple his wage to £60,000 as he looks to compete with De Gea for a spot in the first team.

"Henderson's agent is in talks currently with United in regards to an upgraded contract," McGarry told the Transfer Window Podcast.

"Henderson himself wants to play first-team football and does not want to come back as the errant number two to David de Gea. However, Solskjaer is unwilling to guarantee Henderson that he will be first choice.

"It's now up to him whether he signs an upwards contract with United and take his chances. Although it is being discussed in negotiations that Henderson would be open to returning to United starting as number one in pre-season.

"If he is deemed not good enough, he would be happy to fight it out with De Gea for the number one spot."

Several months ago Sheffield United had seemed confident of signing Henderson on loan again ahead of the 2020/21 season but they dropped a big hint that the player would be returning to Old Trafford by making a bid for Aaron Ramsdale.

Although Bournemouth rebuffed their advances, the fact they are going after a proven Premier League goalkeeper suggests that the 23-year-old won't be returning to Bramall Lane next campaign.
