The Blades claimed a crucial 2-0 victory over Leeds at the weekend to move to within four points of safety and the Scotsman praised the impact of the supporters.
"The fans have been fantastic and they were behind us from the off," Montgomery told the club's official website.
"They haven't had much to cheer, but to go home with a win against Leeds will be special to them.
"We need them more than ever between now and the end of the season."
