Sheffield United relegation from Premier League confirmed

Sheffield United's two-year stay in the Premier League came to an end on Saturday evening, after they were officially relegated to the Championship following a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Blades needed to avoid defeat in order to mathematically keep any hopes of a miraculous escape alive, but a second half strike from Willian Jose condemned them to their 26th league loss of the campaign.

And Sheffield United's failure to pick up any points leaves them 19 behind 17th place Burnley, ending their chances of avoiding relegation, and confirming their return to the Championship next season.

The loss to Wolves confirms what has been known for many months now, as Sheffield United's wretched start and continued poor form throughout the season gave them the most uphill of tasks in trying to climb the table.

This season pales in stark contrast compared to last year, in which Chris Wilder's side wowed viewers with their exciting and impressive style of football. The Blades ended the 2019/20 campaign in ninth position in the Premier League table, and appeared on the cusp of European qualification for the majority of the season.

Sheffield United suffered a dip in form towards the end of the campaign, and that slump has carried over into this current season, leaving them with a shocking four wins in 32 attempts. The dismal second season saw Wilder lose his job in March, with Paul Heckingbottom has stepped in to see out the final weeks.

Blades supporters will have fond memories of their time in the top flight, after they recorded some famous victories against the Premier League heavyweights in their debut campaign, and won plaudits for their bold style of football.

The Yorkshire side must now regroup and will look to bounce straight back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, as Norwich City have done, after their promotion was confirmed on Saturday afternoon.
