The race to the golden boot

Here at Blades Mad we take a look at the race to the golden boot. Sheffield United's James Beattie is one of the contenders. Kevin Phillips of WBA and Sylvan Ebanks Blake of Wolverhampton Wanderers are the others.

James Beattie, Sheffield United (22 goals)
After becoming the Blades record signing of £4m, Beattie has become the hero of many Sheffield United's games this season. He salvaged a point against rivals Sheffield Wednesday while he scored the equalisers against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road and Bramall Lane.

Two superb free-kicks in the past two weeks has put the spotlight on Beattie as he currently reclaims top spot despite being out for several games around Christmas. He is the Blades regular penalty taker as he has stepped upto the spot seven times and missed only twice.

Kevin Phillips, West Brom (22 goals)
The former Southampton man used to pair alongside with Beattie at the Saints. Phillips is a prolific goalscorer while he picked up the FourFourTwo player of the year award in March. He has had twentey seven league appearences for the Baggies this campaign and only has picked up one yellow card.

Despite scoring goals in crucial games, Phillips was kept quiet when he visited Bramall Lane and when the Blades travelled to The Hawthorns.

Sylvan Ebanks Blake, Wolves (22 goals)
Ebanks Blake's goals have not all come from Molineux. A mass amount of goals came from Plymouth Argyle when he was a Pilgrim earlier in the season. The Manchester United product has been on hot form since signing for the Black Country team.
