The Owls were relegated from FA Premier League in May 2000 and have been battling against the drop ever since but have managed to win that battle up to now.
The Hillsborough club knew that they had to beat Brighton & Hove Albion at Withdean Stadium and hope that Stoke City fail to beat Coventry City at Highfield Road.
Hopes was given to the Blue half of Sheffield when Grant Holt, who was bought from AFC Barrow on transfer deadline struck to put the visitors ahead but Holt in second half gave away a penalty after handballing. Bobby Zamora stepped up and converted to level peg at 1-1. Both teams gave it there all but the result remained 1-1 at full time.
Wednesday would still have a chance of getting out of the drop if Stoke City hadn't beaten Coventry City, the Potters won 1-0 with a second half own goal by keeper Gary Montgomery.
Another team relegated was Grimsby Town who lost 1-0 to Walsall at Blundell Park, should they have won they would have stood a slim chance of staying up but sadly failed to do so.
The Seagulls are not quite relegated, though one might say that they are down already. They can stay up if they win there next two games (Watford at home and Grimsby Town away) and hope that Stoke City fail to beat Crystal Palace (away) and Reading (home). This would leave both teams level on points but Brighton have slightly the better goal difference.
So what next season for the Owls, well they will have to try there best to return to Division One, but there are local derbies in Barnsley and Grimsby Town, there will also be Huddersfield Town and Chesterfield but these two teams need to secure a place in Division Two first.
For the lower league clubs there is a trophy specially for them, it is the famous L.D.V. Vans Trophy which is contested between Division Two, Three and some invited Nationwide Conference clubs, Bristol City are the current holders after beating Carlisle United a few weeks ago.
Good luck to Wednesday for next season, it will be strange there not be a Steel City Derby despite what happens to the Blades!
