Wharton Exhibition Is A Must See

The exhibition is simply titled 'In a league of his own: Arthur Wharton - the first black footballer' and will feature all aspects of his life.

Wharton, who was born on Gold Coast of Africa arrived in Britain at the age of 20. He played in goal for various teams, including Rotherham Town (now Rotherham United), Darlington, Preston North End as well as making two appearances against Linfield Athletic and Stoke City for Sheffield United in 1894.

The exhibition runs from Monday 19 January 2004 to 21 March in the temporary exhibition gallery of the National Coal Mining Museum at Overton, Wakefield.
