Brown, 30 was originally signed by Neil Warnock in December 1999 from City but left in January 2004 after the Blades failed to win promotion to the Premier League. He joined Tottenham Hotspur in a £1,200,000 deal.

Whilst with the Blades he helped them reach the Semi-Finals of the FA Cup and League Cup during the 2002-03 campaign scoring memorable goals along the way and also helped the club reach the Play-Off Final in the same season.

He ended that season as clubs' top scorer with 22, but will always be remembered for his flashing volley against Sheffield Wednesday as United beat the Owls 3-1 at home.

It has emerged that United are interested in re-signing Brown who is supposed to be on his way to Wigan Athletic for a medical.

However after missing out on Thomas Gravesen, Blades boss Bryan Robson is keen to re-unite Brown with Bramall Lane and is believed that United have placed a bid better than the Latics.

The return of Michael Brown would be seen as a magnificent foot step in the Blades return to the Premiership; and bring back hope to a lot of fans!
