Gerrard, 33 who is without a club since he was released by Forest in July has become a target for Neil Warnock after learning of a keeper shortage since Paddy Kenny received a thigh injury.

The injury to Kenny took him out of the defeat to Reading last Saturday and may also miss the crucial meeting at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal next weekend.

And, with the transfer window closed the former Bury manager may turn to Gerrard who is without a club as backup for Kenny and second choice Ian Bennett.

Between August 2003 to December 2003 Gerrard played 16 league games for United whilst on loan from Everton after Paddy Kenny was out injured.

Meanwhile former United striker Carl Asaba; who was released by Millwall this summer is currently having a trial with Championship outfit Leicester City. He has recently been training with Leeds United and has seen a move to Derby County turned down.
