Described as a powerful right-back Dounbe has played twelve times for Cameroon despite being born in Paris, France.

He began his career with Auxerre in 2001before moving onto Rennes in 2004. In January 2007 he moved to Scotland were he played for Celtic on loan; helping them win the domestic league title and scored the winning goal with five minutes remaining as the Bhoys overcame Dunfermline 1-0 in the FA Cup Final.

In 2003 he won a runners-up medal with Cameroon in the Confederations Cup, whilst he also won the Coupe de France (domestic cup) with AJ Auxerre in 2003.
