Wilson confirms interest in Murphy

The United gaffer has reiterated his intentions to strengthen the squad in the summer, and has highlighted the midfield area as a key position to bring in additions, particularly on the wings.

When quizzed at his pre-Crawley press conference, Wilson backed up reports that United had made contact with their Scottish counterparts to see if they are interested in negotiating a deal.

He said: "We are looking at a lot of players and have made contact with Motherwell regarding Jamie.

"But as we speak we aren't close to striking a deal because ultimately it comes down to self financing. I am not prepared to comment any further as that would be disrespectful to Motherwell and Stuart (McCall).

"If possible we will progress in January. It is the type of market we are looking at."

Jamie Murphy has been very much part of Stuart McCall's Motherwell side which has catapulted themselves to second in the SPL, just four points behind league leaders Celtic.

Reports suggest that the Blades have lodged a £200,000 bid for the 23-year-old Glaswegian born winger, and have also included Jordan Chapell and Callum McFadzean on loan terms in the deal to try and push it through.

Murphy netted twice in his side's 3:2 victory over Hibernian at Easter Road at the weekend, further alerting sides particularly south of the border of his services.

He turned down a summer move to Championship side Blackpool, but could be interested in being part of Danny Wilson's young side his building together.

Wilson is aware that the wide areas have been problematic at times this season, and knows that this must be an area he should be looking to strengthen in. He continued:

"I have spoken before about signing players to play in the wide areas and nothing has changed."

United are believed to be keen in rubber-stamping a deal, especially considering two highly rated fringe players can gain experience in the SPL.

One notable former Blades player who went out on loan to play Scottish football includes Kyle Naughton who went out on loan to Gretna, and has since broken his way into Andre Villas Boas' Tottenham Hotspur side.
