Now, here's why it frustrates me, and am sure plenty other Unitedites who made the needless journey down south. The decision made by referee Jarnail Singh is debatable, but the timing of it is damn right disgusting. I step off the train at Peterborough railway station, only for a policeman to come up to me saying 'sorry, lad, the game has been postponed'. This was at 12:30PM!
If allegations are to be believed, the Peterborough groundsman 'FORGOT TO PUT THE COVERS ON THE PITCH' the previous night. Other allegations say that the 'youth team played on the pitch on Friday', and to make it even worse, 'the coppers supposedly knew that the game wasn't going to go ahead at 9:00AM Saturday morning'.
If all of the allegations above are true then it highly upsets me, and my fellow Blades fans, who probably wouldn't have even set off at 9:00AM. I hadn't, anyway, I was going on the 9:47 train from Sheffield to Derby. The timing of the decision is outrageous, and the disaster is familiar to many Blades fans. Last season, Leyton Orient called the game off with just two hours to kick-off when they were pencilled in to face United in the FA Cup.
I am personally going to write to The Football League and Peterborough United to ask for answers and explain my grievance. A complete waste of time, not to mention a waste of money in travel expenses. I have seen videos of the playing surface at London Road and it doesn't look as bad as PUFC are making out, although granted, I haven't actually stepped foot on it.
No game in the Football League was postponed yesterday, except one, and that was ours! I would have accepted the disappointment easier when I arrived at Peterborough on the train if it wasn't as bright and sunny as it was when I stepped on to the platform.
Something needs to be done so it prevents fans from travelling for absolutely nothing - not just at London Road, but all around the country. A pitch inspection, as I've already said, at 12:15PM is out of order. There was no notification or hint that the game could be off on Saturday morning when I left. Why not get a local referee to inspect it earlier, or perhaps get the actual match referee to arrive earlier to inspect it? I bet he had his travel expenses paid!
Rant over. Up the Blades!
