Under the leadership of Billy Davies the City Ground club threatened to win promotion last season after spending big money twelve months ago.
However hopes of reaching the Premier League were dashed when despite finishing third in the league were dumped out of the play-offs by Blackpool, losing 6-4 on aggregate.
Their record in the play-offs could be considered terrible compared to that of Sheffield United, since the start of the first Premier League season the Reds have made a top six finishers on three occasions and in each of those fixtures have yet to make it to the final.
