AFC Wimbledon vs. Sheffield United - Part 2

Having won promotion to League One via the backdoor, AFC Wimbledon have made a difficult start to what will be the clubs' highest ever finish come the sound of the final whistle on 30th April 2017. They were sitting at bottom of the table until they achieved a 2-1 victory at home to Chesterfield last Saturday after starting the season with three consecutive defeats.

AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley

Dom Poleon's last-gasp goal secured AFC Wimbledon their first-ever Sky Bet League One victory as they beat Chesterfield 2-1 at Kingsmeadow. The first half was short of action but it was the visitors who looked the more threatening. With half an hour played, Ched Evans drove in to the Dons area but saw his effort palmed over the bar by Ryan Clarke. Just moments later, Reece Mitchell dragged an effort across the face of the goal.

Sam Hird then found the opening for the Spireites, as he headed a corner that deflected off Darius Charles and went down as an own goal. The early period of the second half saw the visitors' domination continue, but the Dons found an equaliser against the run of play. Defender Paul Robinson latched onto a George Francomb corner and guided the ball past Chesterfield keeper Ryan Fulton.

A combination of excellent saves and poor finishing saw the sides heading towards the final whistle with a point each. The Dons, however, found a winner in the first minute of stoppage time when substitute Poleon neatly swivelled and fired home.

New signing Chris Robertson is in line to make his AFC Wimbledon debut when they host Sheffield United. The former Ross County defender signed for the club last Tuesday but was ineligible for the Dons' victory over Chesterfield last weekend. George Francomb will look to retain his place in Neal Ardley's side having made his first start since April after he suffered a knee injury.

New signings Tyrone Barnett and Dominic Poleon will be pushing for starting places after the latter scored the last-minute winner against the Spireites.
