Blades Season Review: 2015/16 - October - Part 2

Last updated : 29 May 2016 By @blades_mad1889

2,111 Blades turned out at Oldham Athletic on the day of the passing of former boss Howard Kendall. Former Blade Danny Philliskirk opened the scoring for the hosts and Done levels inside the first half. The Latics are reduced to ten men after the hour mark but United were unable to make that advantage count.

Dean Hammond goes straight into the XI to face Fleetwood Town after joining on loan from eventually Premier League winners Leicester City, a signing which on paper looked good. Against the Cod Army, it took Che Adams one minute to open up the scoring, he would add a further strike as would Billy Sharp to complete a 3-0 win.

When it looked like United were picking up results again it all comes to a jolting halt with Millwall claiming a 2-1 win at the Lane. Before the month is complete United allow Academy starlet Otis Khan to join National League side Barrow on a month's loan before registering a disappointing defeat at Crewe Alexandra.

Oldham Athletic 1-1 Sheffield United
Saturday, 17th October 2015 - League One

Sheffield United had to settle for a point as they drew 1-1 at 10-man Oldham. The Blades carved out several second-half chances, but they were badly let down by their finishing. Oldham went in front on 10 minutes when a Mike Jones corner flicked off United's Jose Baxter, giving Danny Philliskirk the chance to convert a close-range header at the back post. Carl Winchester almost doubled the lead, but United equalised on the half-hour when Stefan Scougall set up Matt Done for an excellent 18-yard shot into the top corner.

Visiting keeper Mark Howard was forced into two smart saves after being tested by Dominic Poleon but the Blades' threat increased after half-time and Done wasted a golden chance when he fired wide after running clean through. The home side went down to 10 men in the 62nd minute, with Jonathan Burn receiving his second yellow card for a foul on Billy Sharp. Sharp then missed a sitter from inside the six-yard box before Scougall hit the post when he should have scored.

Sheffield United 3-0 Fleetwood Town
Tuesday, 20th October 2015 - League One

Che Adams scored twice and Billy Sharp was also on target as Sheffield United won 3-0 at home to Fleetwood Town. Adams struck after just a minute, finding the net from close range after keeper Chris Maxwell failed to hold the ball following Chris Basham's low cross. There were no further meaningful efforts on goal until late in the half when United's Jamal Campbell-Ryce had a shot blocked and Neill Collins fired over following a corner.

Adams then received the ball from Sharp inside the area but he scuffed his shot straight at Maxwell. Adams (64) scored his second of the night, shooting past Maxwell after good work from Kieran Wallace. Wallace was again the provider when Sharp (72) made it 3-0 with a close-range finish.

Jamie Proctor wasted a good chance for Fleetwood, heading off-target. Antonio Sarcevic also put a long-range effort wide for the visitors, who never threatened to mount a comeback. The Blades have now won their last four home games.

Sheffield United 1-2 Millwall
Saturday, 24th October 2015 - League One

Aiden O'Brien scored twice to give Millwall a third straight victory, winning 2-1 at Sheffield United. Jose Baxter was on target for the hosts but Millwall had enough thanks to O'Brien. Millwall carved out a couple of early chances with Fred Onyedinma shooting wide from the right-hand side of the area and Mark Beevers heading wide after meeting George Saville's corner. United's Che Adams grazed the outside of Jordan Archer's right-hand post with a low 20-yard shot and Chris Basham had a goal-bound shot blocked.

It was first blood to Millwall when O'Brien (30) got his head to a ball played into the area by Shaun Cumming and steered the ball beyond keeper Mark Howard. Saville then tested Howard with a low drive which forced the keeper to get down to his right to save. Baxter (70) equalised with a fine, first-time shot past Archer following Kieron Freeman's low cross. O'Brien (80) scored the winner, sliding in to meet Shane Ferguson's ball across the face of goal and force the ball over the line.

Crewe Alexandra 1-0 Sheffield United
Saturday, 31st October 2015

Ryan Colclough ended Crewe's long wait for home success as he netted in the 1-0 win over Sheffield United. The Railwaymen last won in front of their own fans back on March 7 and Colclough's second-half strike provided League One's bottom club with their first success in 15 home outings. While they were forced to defend stoically for large parts of the game, the Cheshire side did offer a threat, in particular through their match-winner.

Crewe goalkeeper Ben Garratt did well to push away a fierce 25-yard drive from Jose Baxter which was heading for the top corner in a first half in which Marcus Haber and Colclough also went close for Crewe. Mark Howard was an admirable last line of defence for Nigel Adkins' side when he kept out a Colclough effort with his feet after the restart.

But Colclough was not to be denied as the strugglers seized the initiative in the 71st minute. He picked up Chris Basham's clearing header on the edge of the box and drove it low and hard past Howard. Dean Hammond went close to salvaging a point with a late header which flew inches over the bar, but Steve Davis' men held on.
