Chesterfield vs. Sheffield United

The Blades trip to Chesterfield is the clubs third fixture in the First Team's pre-season schedule. They have already recorded a 9-0 victory at Stocksbridge Park Steels, which saw striker Caolon Lavery score a second half hat-trick. The team then went on a mini-break to Spain where they faced Malaga CF last Friday. A John Fleck first half strike was enough to separate the two teams.

As well as a trip to Chesterfield tonight, the Blades also have fixtures with Rotherham United (away), Stoke City (home), and Eastleigh (away) before starting the Championship season at home to Brentford.

As far as we are aware, United face no injury concerns, though they will be without; George Long (AFC Wimbledon), Chris Hussey (Swindon Town), Ben Whiteman (Doncaster Rovers), James Wilson (Walsall), and Louis Reed (Chesterfield) - all have left the club on season long loan deals. Meanwhile transfer-listed defender John Brayford is training with the team but is understood will not take part in any fixtures.

The Spirites have just completed a six days tour of Portugal and Spain where they drew 0-0 with Benfica B, and lost 2-0 against Garry Monk's Middlesbrough. Prior to their tour of Europe, the League Two side claim on the spin victories at Sheffield FC (4-1), Matlock Town (4-0) and Buxton (4-0).

Sheffield United 3-2 Chesterfield
Sunday, 30th April 2017 - League One

Champions Sheffield United defeat Chesterfield to finish season on 100 points League One champions Sheffield United beat relegated Chesterfield 3-2 to end the season on 100 points. United twice surrendered the lead as goals from Kieron Freeman and Billy Sharp were cancelled out by efforts from Kristian Dennis (penalty) and Paul McGinn before Daniel Lafferty struck the winner.

The visitors' cause was not helped by the dismissal of Dan Gardner midway through the second half with the score at 2-2. After Dennis had a couple of good chances early on, United struck the first blow when Freeman (18) tapped in following a goalmouth scramble. Sharp saw his low drive well saved by Thorsten Stuckmann, who turned the ball onto his right post.

Dennis (45) equalised with a penalty, sending Moore the wrong way from the spot after the goalkeeper had brought down Reece Mitchell inside the area. Sharp (59) put the hosts in front with his 30th goal of the campaign, a powerful header from a Samir Carruthers cross.

Chesterfield levelled again when McGinn (65) scored with a low, angled shot. Gardner was sent off a minute later after clashing with Sharp. And Lafferty (83) struck the winner when Stuckmann got a hand to his low shot but could not keep it out.
