The meeting between the United's of Sheffield and West Ham will long be remembered for two events; 1) the Tevez affair, and 2) Tony Currie's strike in the 1970's but as far as the League Cup is concerned the Hammers have come up trumps in the two meetings played to date. In the 1971/72 season the Blades faced their London opponents in round five after seeing off; Fulham (3-0), York City (3-2) and Arsenal (2-0 replay) all at home but their visit to Upton Park ended in a 5-0 defeat on 17 November. West Ham would bow out at the semi-final stage to eventual winners Stoke City.
Our next meeting in this competition came on 29 October 1991. Having bypassed Wigan Athletic (3-2 agg) United entertained West Ham at Bramall Lane with the visitors winning by two goals to nil. A snippet from The Times newspaper read; 'Frank McAvennie cannot seem to stop scoring since his recall from the reserves to the West Ham United attack earlier this month. He claimed the opener at Sheffield United with a header from Stuart Slater's cross, and Mike Small secured a 2-0 win from the penalty spot.'
LAST TWO MEETINGS
25 November 2006 - West Ham United 1 Sheffield United 0
Hayden Mullins' first-half header heralded a whole new era at Upton Park as West Ham cut through Sheffield United to give new chairman Eggert Magnusson a welcome winning start. After 111 years under East End ownership, baking baron Magnusson's £108million midweek takeover had led Alan Pardew to concede that his 16th-placed side needed to get back to winning ways under the new regime. And having spent all that dough, the Icelandic investor, who was given a traditional Cockney welcome, saw West Ham fittingly rise to the task. Neil Warnock's strugglers - in 18th spot - had only managed a trio of league and cup victories all season and, after last Saturday's defeat against table-topping Manchester United, the Blades boss made just one change as Nick Montgomery came in for Colin Kazim-Richards.Following last week's narrow reverse at fortress Stamford Bridge, West Ham, with only three wins, too, had retained Carlos Tevez in an unchanged line-up.
Certainly, the Argentinian had impressed against Chelsea and within four minutes he found himself racing on to Lee Bowyer's quickly-taken free-kick and drilling a low, angled shot into the side-netting. But the organised Yorkshiremen quickly re-grouped and, at the other end, Nicky Law sent a rising, angled shot flying behind on the quarter-hour mark, before Paul Konchesky scrambled Claude Davis' downward header away from the base of his right-hand post. With neither side able to find the killer pass, the game looked set to degenerate into a midfield stalemate and Montgomery's caution for felling the fleeing Nigel Reo-Coker only served to heighten the Anglo-Icelandic anxiety. Ten minutes before the interval, the breaking Bobby Zamora's unselfish pass into the danger zone looked to have done the trick, only for the sliding Robert Kozluk to divert Bowyer's goalbound shot wide.
That was only a temporary reprieve, though, for when Matthew Etherington floated over the consequent corner, Anton Ferdinand's flick-on was met by the in-rushing Mullins, who powerfully nodded Hammers' into an interval lead with his second goal of the campaign. If West Ham had edged the first period, then Sheffield United soon gained the upper hand after the break as Law, Montgomery and Alan Quinn each tried their luck with early efforts. But as the Blades struggled to find any true cutting edge, there were yellow cards for the dissenting duo of Rob Hulse and Keith Gillespie, whose frustration was further heightened by Danny Gabbidon's brilliant saving tackle on substitute Christian Nade. Shortly afterwards, the Hammers' Welsh defender was stretchered away with a hamstring injury and as the East Enders re-grouped, Nade toe-poked Gillespie's inch-perfect cross wide from just eight yards, before Law drilled an angled effort beyond the far post.
West Ham offered little in reply and not even the introduction of Teddy Sheringham and Marlon Harewood for the toiling Tevez - who instantly stormed away from Upton Park - and Zamora could inject any impetus. Instead the fresh legs of the Sheffield substitute trio - Nade, Steve Kabba and Kazim-Richards - set up a frantic finale in which Mikele Leigertwood went close and Kozluk had a last-gasp tap-in ruled out to the dismay of Warnock and the joy of Mr Magnusson.
14 April 2007 - Sheffield United 3 West Ham United 0
West Ham United plunged into deeper trouble as Sheffield United picked themselves up after a disastrous spell to pull clear of the relegation zone. Midfielder Michael Tonge scored six minutes before the interval with Phil Jagielka and Jon Stead striking in a ten-minute spell to kill off the Hammers. Neil Warnock reshuffled the side that lost 2-1 to Newcastle last week, in an effort to stop the rot after three defeats in a row. West Ham, whose run of three successive victories had handed them a lifeline, carved out an early opening, Carlos Tevez scooping the ball over the top from 14 yards before a blunder let in the Blades. Keith Gillespie, in space on the right flank, was given time to pump a long ball into the goalmouth, James Collins mis-kicked 12 yards out and the unmarked Colin Kazim-Richards ballooned the loose ball over the target.
The Blades, who had surrendered a ten-point cushion to drop back into the bottom three, and backed by a 30,000 plus crowd, tested West Ham on 20 minutes. Kazim-Richards caused problems on the left before French striker Christian Nade stepped in to fire in low shot that was blocked six yards from goal. The London side, with Tevez proving a handful, earned a corner in the 29th minute after catching Sheffield United on the break. Matthew Etherington picked out Bobby Zamora lurking at the far post but the striker, who grabbed the winner against Arsenal last week, pulled his header wide. Minutes later Lee Bowyer saw his driving header flash inches wide as West Ham picked up the pace.
Sheffield United swept ahead in the 39th minute after Anton Ferdinand, booked two minutes earlier, bundled over Nade a yard from the edge of the area. Tonge stepped forward to score a spectacular goal, smashing his free-kick into the top right-hand corner. Mark Noble tried his luck with a long-range strike which flashed over the bar before Paddy Kenny pulling off a stunning stop as Sheffield United clung onto the lead. Tevez sparked the chance as he weaved towards the area before picking out full-back Lucas Neill who drove in a low strike from 15 yards as Kenny dived to his right to pull off a one-handed save.
Tevez should have scored minutes later after another darting run left two defenders flat-footed. But the Argentinian pulled his close-range shot over the bar before United added a second, centre-back Jagielka connecting with a Gillespie corner to score with a text-book header from ten yards. Stead finished off the London side 12 minutes from time cutting inside from the right flank to drill his low shot beyond the helpless Robert Green and into the far corner.
