Head-to-Head: MK Dons

Last updated : 27 February 2014 By @blades_mad1889

The history of Milton Keynes Dons is open very much to debate. The origional club, Wimbledon FC were formed (like Sheffield United) in 1889 and remaind so, rising as a non-league giant into the Premier League and winning the FA Cup as minows in 1988 - famously beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final. Whilst they had their ups, they sadly had their downs and in 1991 due to financial difficulty left their Plough Lane home and groundshared Selhurst Park, home of Crystal Palace.

They remaind in Croyden until 2004, with dwindling home attendences the club was given a rare opportunity to move to Milton Keynes whom didn't have a recognised football team in the Football League. However this proposed move wasn't welcoming to Dons support and when they finally made the move the club split into two with AFC Wimbledon starting life in non-league whilst the more recognisable MK Dons formed as an entirely new club despite trading under the name Wimbledon FC in it's initial 12 months.

The club moved to the National Hockey Stadium for the 2003-04 season whilst their impressive Stadium:MK home was built. Our first game at the new stadium was in 2007 in the League which required a extra-time winner from unwanted striker Geoff Horsefield...

Geoff Horsfield's extra-time winner edged out Paul Ince's plucky MK Dons 3-2 and sent Sheffield United through to the Carling Cup third round. The 33-year-old striker pounced on a spill by Dons goalkeeper Nathan Abbey in the 103rd minute to settle a topsy-turvy five-goal thriller at stadium:mk. Drewe Broughton opened his Dons account to put the League Two side ahead in the 11th minute when he nipped in ahead of Blades' goalkeeper Paddy Kenny at the near post to convert Jude Stirling's low cross from close range.

Chris Lucketti equalised for Sheffield United just nine minutes later with a towering 12-yard header from Nicky Law's corner that Abbey could only tip into the corner of the net. Alan Navarro then curled a 22-yard effort inches wide as the Dons dominated the remainder of the first half. But the Blades upped their game after the break and Law's first professional goal put Bryan Robson's men 2-1 up nine minutes after the re-start. The 19-year-old winger blasted the rebound into the corner of the net from 10 yards after Jon Stead's shot from Alan Quinn's cross had been saved by Abbey.

Jon-Paul McGovern's 25-yard free-kick took a wicked deflection of the United wall to equalise for the Dons in the 69th minute and send the game into extra-time. But Horsfield slotted in the winner from close range 13 minutes into the first period of extra-time after Luton Shelton's fizzing 22-yard drive had been spilled by Abbey.

25 October 2011 - Sheffield United 2 MK Dons 1

Goals from Richard Cresswell and Matt Phillips lifted Sheffield United into fourth place after a 2-1 home win against MK Dons, who had Adam Smith sent-off late on. The visitors enjoyed a good spell when Jabo Ibehre flicked a near post effort wide and Stephen Gleeson saw a couple of shots deflected off-target. But Cresswell gave the hosts a 22nd-minute lead, firing low past Martin after finding himself in space on the left-hand side of the penalty area.

The Blades finished the first half strongly with Phillips having a shot saved and Harry Maguire heading narrowly wide. Gleeson struck the equaliser for the Dons in the 52nd minute with a fine shot from the edge of the area.

But Phillips put the Blades back in front in the 67th minute, scoring from close range after Billy Clarke had produced a surging run to the byline and played the ball across the face of goal, while the Dons were reduced to 10 men in the 83rd minute when Smith picked up a second booking.

21 April 2012 - MK Dons 1 Sheffield United 0

Alan Smith's first goal in five years secured a 1-0 win and a play-off place for 10-man MK Dons and Sheffield United's automatic promotion hopes. The on-loan Newcastle forward headed the only goal of the game in the 16th minute as the Dons survived the 67th-minute dismissal of Daniel Powell to claim their third straight win. The Milton Keynes club controlled the first half and skipper Dean Lewington had a bundled effort cleared off the goal-line by Kevin McDonald before Smith put them ahead.

Dean Bowditch's inswinging corner was headed towards goal by Lewington and Smith was on hand to nod in his first goal since 2007 from a yard out. The Dons twice almost doubled their lead after the interval as Gary MacKenzie headed against a post from Lewington's free-kick before Smith had a header cleared off the line by Michael Doyle. The hosts were reduced to 10 men midway through the second half when Powell picked up his second booking in 14 minutes for hauling back Matthew Hill as he broke away.

The Blades piled forward late on but Chris Porter and Doyle placed their best chances too close to goalkeeper David Martin, while substitute Jabo Ibehre hit a post for the Dons at the death.

10 November 2012 - MK Dons 1 Sheffield United 0

Defender Shaun Williams scored a last-minute penalty to give MK Dons a 1-0 victory and end Sheffield United's unbeaten start to the npower League One season. Williams coolly stroked home his spot-kick after Angelo Balanta was fouled in the box by substitute Darryl Westlake. The hosts controlled the first half and Dean Bowditch twice went close, while Balanta had a curling 25-yard shot well-saved by George Long.

United striker Nick Blackman had a 20-yard snap-shot saved by David Martin before Dons forward Bowditch had a strong penalty appeal turned down after he appeared to be tripped by Neill Collins. The Dons continued to dominate after the break and Ryan Lowe missed a golden opportunity when he fired straight at Long from Luke Chadwick's perfect lay-off.

The visitors rarely threatened but it looked like they would hang on for a fifth successive clean sheet until Williams' late penalty settled matters.

9 March 2013 - Sheffield United 0 MK Dons 0

Sheffield United lost ground in the League One title race after they were held to a 0-0 draw by MK Dons at Bramall Lane. The home side had the better of a scrappy encounter but failed to make the breakthrough as their unbeaten run stretched to seven games. Barry Robson tested Dons goalkeeper Ian McLoughlin from long distance in the sixth minute before the Scottish midfielder crossed for striker Dave Kitson to nod narrowly over the crossbar on the stroke of half-time.

The Dons offered little going forward and Anthony Kay's tame looping header five minutes after the break was as close as they came to a goal. Blades substitute Jonathan Forte wasted the best chance of the game with 20 minutes remaining. He raced clear on goal from Kevin McDonald's pass only to see his effort take the slightest of touches off McLoughlin and roll wide.

The visitors thought they should have had a penalty in the 76th minute but Dons substitute Patrick Bamford was booked for diving after he went down in the penalty area when through on goal.

31 August 2013 - Sheffield United 0 MK Dons 1

Antony Kay headed a late winner as MK Dons snatched a 1-0 League One win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. Defender Kay powered in Shaun Williams' 87th-minute free-kick, moments after Blades substitute Febian Brandy, who was later sent off, missed an open goal. Dons striker Izale McLeod had the best opportunity of the opening stages but the former United player skewed his 14th-minute effort wide after tricking his way past defender Harry Maguire.

The home side responded and debutant Jose Baxter thumped a volley the wrong side of the right-hand upright. United should have snatched the advantage minutes into the second half but striker Lyle Taylor squandered the opportunity to grab his maiden Blades goal by diverting Baxter's deflected effort narrowly wide. Dons goalkeeper David Martin dived at full stretch to turn away Tony McMahon's free-kick before Brandy inexplicably fired wide of the gaping goal from Baxter's centre five minutes from time.

Kay then nodded home at the back post and United's misery was compounded in injury time when Brandy received a straight red card for a late tackle on Lee Hodson.
