Salisbury last officiated a Sheffield United fixture – the Blades 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town. He was also named as fourth official for our 3-1 FA Cup loss at home to Aston Villa last January.
An engineer by trade, Salisbury started refereeing in 1985 and progressed through the West Lancashire and Northern Premier Leagues to reach National List status in 1998, being promoted to the referees’ list in 2001.
His first match in charge involving Sheffield United was the League Cup tie at Macclesfield Town when United came from a goal down to win 2-1 via two Jack Lester goals. Months later Lester was involved again when he refereed our home game with Watford and was forced to send off Millwall keeper Lenny Pidgeley after he handballed outside the box after Lester had beaten him.
The following season he sent off both Alan Quinn and Andy Impey in the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest in a typical fiery fixture between the two clubs. Last Saturday, he officiated the 0-0 draw between Oxford United and Chesterfield in League Two.
Mr. Salisbury doesn’t have the reputation of dishing out red cards like confetti; but may well have his whits about him. In the previous five meetings between Sheffield United and Barnsley there have been no fewer than three players from both sides; Paul Connelly, Ugo Ehiogu for the Blades and Anderson de Silva for Tarn have all been dismissed.
