A day later Wright played a full 90 minutes for the first time in a united shirt as the reserves beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Bramall Lane. The last time he featured at the lane was in a 3-3 draw for Ipswich the previous season but would hold a clean sheet to his name.

A mixture of first team and youth players represented the Blades in this Totesport.com League clash against the Owls Reserves; Daniel Bogdanovic netted a first half penalty to win the game for the home side after Richard Hinds handballed in the box.

The Blades also featured trialist Elian Parrino; a centre-half from Argentine outfit Estudiantes – he would sign on a season’s long loan deal mainly as cover.

Off the field and chairman Kevin McCabe continued to seek investment into the club that could help take them forward and eventually into the Premier League; news emerged that a Malaysian businessman could push cash into the club within the next six weeks.

Blades boss Gary Speed dipped into the transfer market again; signing Belgian national defender Ritchie de Laet on a month’s loan from Manchester United to cover an injured Chris Morgan.

Days later the first team were in Championship action once again; coming face to face with the old enemy that is Leeds United. The Whites were new to this league having being promoted as runners-up in League One.

Richard Wright appeared on the substitute’s bench with the recognisable Steve Simonsen starting in goal; the game was seemingly to stay locked at 0-0 until virtually the death when a failed clearance from Stephen Jordan allowed substitute Robert Snodgrass to nip round and square the ball through to Bradley Johnson who put into an empty net.

Towards the death Johannes Ertl’s header crashed against the crossbar with Richard Cresswell unable to finish; both sides were also reduced to ten men each with Snodgrass first receiving two yellow cards despite only being on field of play for 30 minutes.

Jamie Ward, who had only been on slightly longer was handed a straight red card for a rash challenge. On the same day youngster Jordan Slew netted a hat-trick in a 4-3 victory at Newcastle United.

In a trip to Nottingham Forest the Blades dug out a 1-1 draw despite taking a sixth minute lead through Richard Cresswell – Paul McKenna later netted a scorcher for the hosts. They ended the month of September 18th in the table and three points adrift of the drop zone.
