The Blades were treated by their hosts with a beautiful Sandy Lane playing surface, and it was in fact the Tigers' first game back their for a couple of years.

United offered no helping hand in Worksop's quest for a victory back in their usual home though as a first-half strike from Corey Gregory proved to be the decisive goal.

Many more recognised players were in action, with a flux of substitutions being made throughout the second period by boss Danny Wilson.

Steve Simonsen, Lescinel Jean-Francois, Michael Doyle, Matt Lowton and Lee Williamson all had a chance to impress the new manager, with none of them being present for the Sheffield FC game. Goalkeeper Matt Duke, formerly of Hull City, played the second-half for the Blades. Reports have linked the shot-stopper with a move to Bramall Lane.

Ched Evans, Stephen Quinn and Nick Montgomery weren't '100% fit and weren't risked' states the club's official website.

United's breakthrough came on 33 minutes when an Erik Tonne cross found Corey Gregory at the back-post, who could neatly volley into the back of the net.

United had a penalty appeal before the first-half concluded after Philliskirk seemed to have been felled, but the referee was having none of it.

Wilson made nine half-time substitutions, with Francois switching to centre-back from left-back. Another United penalty claim, this time from Lee Williamson, couldn't convince the referee.

Philliskirk had a close-range drill saved by the Worksop goalkeeper, while Duke made an assuring save down low to his right.

United had a few half-chances before the 90 was up, but nothing materialised.

In front of a 1,364 crowd, the Blades and Danny Wilson secured their first win of pre-season. The squad travels out to Malta this week ahead of what's to be a gruelling training schedule, whilst two games have been pencilled in for Monday 18th and Wednesday 20th, against Sliema Wanderers and Hibernians respectively.

The full-time score from Sandy Lane is: Worksop Town 0:1 Sheffield United.
