Morecambe 0:2 Sheffield United

Goals from Tony McMahon and Joe Ironside ensured United culminated their pre-season preparations with a victory.

A decent contingent of Blades fans made the trip up the M6 to Lancashire, in what was our first visit to the Shrimpers' relatively new home.

It was a strong side Danny Wilson fielded against John Still's men, a side that you wouldn't argue was far off United's strongest possible line-up.

The early exchanges saw little in terms of goalmouth action, but Cofie tested the Morecambe keeper with a fierce shoot; the man between the sticks prevailed.

The deadlock was broken when new signing Tony McMahon, who quite obviously was brought in to stop goals from going in at the other end, skipped the challenges of to Morecambe players and beautifully curl the ball into the keepers' top-right hand corner, a goal which would have graced any league in world football. John Cofie will be thought he scored the best goal of pre-season, but that is certainly arguable now.

John Cofie had to be replaced shortly after the goal with what seemed to be a niggle but nothing too serious. From then on, a few half chances for the Blades from then on, including Quinn's shot which the keeper had to save down low.

Chris Porter fluffed a great chance in the early stages of the second half. The ball found it's way to the re-signed striker but he failed to put the ball in either corner of the goal and instead hit it straight at the keeper.

Doyle's 30-yard shot was literally inches wide of the post, with the keeper truly beaten.

The Blades had a scare when Mark Howard couldn't hold onto the ball in the area, with Morecambe through on goal but Harry Maguire heroically got back on the line to block.

Substitute Joe Ironside got his name on the scoresheet for the third time in the space of three days, when he beat the offside trap from Quinn's through ball and cheekily chipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper on 88 minutes, and that was the last of the action.
