Mistakes proved expensive for Wrexham as they crashed out of the Carling Cup.

They gave away the winning goal, through a bad mistake by keeper Matt Baker who ran off his line and collided with defender Brian Carey who would have cleared the ball.

It left the way open for Tommy Black to cut in and shoot, only to see the ball cleared off the line by Craig Morgan who escaped with a yellow card for using a hand.

The clearance was all in vain as the rebound fell nicely for Andy Gray to jab it home and take a grateful United side into the third round.

Gray nearly scored in the first minute with a left-foot shot again after good work by Black who set up the pass and brought a good save from the Wrexham keeper.

Morgan headed Wrexham into the lead early on from Darren Ferguson's left-wing corner. Then, when Ferguson took a free-kick, Chris Llewellyn nearly scored, his fierce drive matched by a good save by keeper Paddy Kenny.

Gray levelled for United with a 15-yard shot and Morgan was unlucky not to put them in the lead, twice heading against the woodwork. First he headed against the post from Leigh Bromby's long throw and when Bromby set him up again, he headed against the crossbar.

Wrexham striker Hector Sam had a bad night, missing several chances including a bad miss from close range when Alex Smith had made a 40-yard run to set him up.

Chris Llewellyn beat Kenny just on the stroke of half time to restore Wrexham's lead, but poor marking by the home defence allowed Phil Jagielka a free header to put United back in the game and set the stage for their easy winner.
